Dear Colleagues,
We are delighted to extend to you a very warm invitation to attend this first International Symposium
on Hand in 2004 in the very busy city of Jakarta. The city has a great number of business and industry
in its surrounding which should be ready with the sophisticated services for the injured, including hand
services. It has been more than 20 years that hand surgery works have its appreciation among surgeons in
Indonesia in their daily practice, but very small numbers of scientific publications have been produced.
It is our most concern to develop faster the understanding of fast growing sophisticated knowledge and
practice of hand surgery, getting along with hand therapy.
A variety of stimulating scientific programs has been arranged to cover almost all the topics for the basic
understanding in dealing with hand injury. To this first scientific meeting we put the theme: professionalism
in keeping the injured hand alive!
Stimulating the future excellent works on hand injury, the meeting will be covering many great papers
presented by many outstanding international speakers as well as national speakers. During the meeting
you will have the opportunity to learn and discuss on current hand injury topics which are spread throughout
eleven symposia and six panel discussions. You will not be regret to discuss with at least five presidents of
National Society for Surgery of the Hand.
It seems to be great if you haven't learned enough yet! We have four instructional courses on topics such
as reposition and fixation of metacarpal and phalangeal fractures, recent techniques in rehabilitation of
hand contracture, how to achieve maximum function after tendon repair, and mostly for specialists and residents
in anaesthesiology, namely regional analgesia / anaesthesia for hand surgery.
The more interesting topics of this meeting would be two workshops on cadaveric dissection. You will feel
them valuable while you learn the topics on local and regional flaps for the hand as well as tendon transfer.
You are very welcome to present your papers on free paper sessions. Every delegates will learn much from
your experiences, innovations, and formal scientific works.
Indonesia has so many social and cultural events that we can appreciate the works using the unique and
amazing hands. Historical scripts, sculpture, painting, music and dances are cultural expressions which
are so fully expressive in the life of traditional way of living of the most interesting tribes of the
Indonesian archipelago, and the contemporary products of modern innovative artists, musician, and dancers.
You may enjoy some in Jakarta with its miniature of beautiful lives of so many cultures of Indonesian.
A very, very warm welcome to you enjoying the scientific meetings, and please do come!

Welcome Message from Chairman of the Indonesian Society for Surgery of the Hand
The development of hand & reconstructive microsurgery in Indonesia has been extensively slow in growth,
as compared to its neighborhood ASEAN countries; let alone in international level.
Despite the country has a number of internationally recognized hand surgeons who have completed their
formal training program in the field, yet their number is not proportionate enough to overcome the matter.
In fact, in some major center, the hand cases have shown its growing trend in number as well as its complexity.
Therefore, it is our duty to foster and promote the highest attainable quality of hand care by improving
the quantity and quality of surgeons that have great interest on this unique and vital organ. Obviously these
vigorous efforts will also put emphasis on the optimal functional outcome of the hand, not merely cosmesis.
It is my full confidence that the more frequent the interactive scientific event and integrated hand
training program will be conducted nationwide, the more beneficial to closing the gap of disparity between
Indonesia and other developed countries.
